Double Up On Donations

J N Williams Memorial Trust has promised to match any donation to the Eastwoodhill Arboretum Endowment Fund at The Sunrise Foundation, dollar for dollar.

They would like to encourage others to join them in building a strong endowment fund to help Eastwoodhill thrive long into the future.

Jane Williams, Eastwoodhill Chair says “unfortunately the funding avenues we’ve relied on in the past are not enough for us to operate and grow a sustainable business today.

We appreciate the generosity of J N Williams Memorial Trust and their gift, along with others, will enhance our ability to be self-reliant and stand strong on our own two feet.”

“We need to strengthen Eastwoodhill as a business and extend into other areas, including education, research and science.

The trustees of J N Williams Memorial Trust understand the direction we are taking and that a strong endowment fund will allow us to do this. We are unbelievably excited and grateful.”

Glenda Stokes, Sunrise Foundation Executive Officer, believes “it is the strength of the endowment model that appeals to J N Williams Memorial Trust. It’s incredible Eastwoodhill doesn’t receive any government funding and is reliant on donations and grants.”

Sunrise Foundation Endowment Fund

The Sunrise Foundation has established an endowment fund for Eastwoodhill after a generous donation was gifted to Sunrise for the arboretum.

Sunrise, a community endowment foundation, was launched by The Warehouse founder Sir Stephen Tindall in October 2014. Although new to New Zealand, community foundations are the fastest growing form of philanthropy worldwide and have been operating for over 100 years in North America.

Glenda Stokes, Sunrise Executive Officer, believes it is the strength of the endowment model, where donations and bequests are invested and grown each year, that appealed to these donors, who wished to remain anonymous.

“When we were contacted by the donors they made it clear they wanted to donate for Eastwoodhill. It was important to them that their gift be protected and inflation proofed for the future. This is why they chose to donate to the Eastwoodhill Endowment Fund at Sunrise, so that they will keep on supporting Eastwoodhill forever,” she says.

Eastwoodhill’s trustees support the establishment of the Eastwoodhill Endowment Fund with Sunrise as a way of helping to ensure the survival of this globally significant collection and support the future development of the arboretum.

Jane Williams, Chairperson of Eastwoodhill says that they are thankful for any donations they receive.

Assistant Curator Dan Taylor has the huge task of keeping Eastwoodhill running today, but he understands that it is just as vital to secure the arboretum’s future for tomorrow.

“This partnership with Sunrise will help to secure Eastwoodhill’s legacy for generations to come.”

Eastwoodhill doesn’t receive government funding. As such we are reliant on the generosity of donors and fundraising is a constant challenge for us. We truly appreciate the generosity of these donors that has enabled the establishment of our new endowment fund at Sunrise
