Going for Gold!

Pru Roberts, Chairwoman of the Eastwoodhill Friends committee, delighted at the prestigious gold award presented to Eastwoodhill for its display at the Ellerslie International Flower Show.

You could have been mistaken for thinking you were looking into the arboretum itself not a 6m x 3m stall set up inside a marquee.

In a huge effort by volunteers and some very generous donations Eastwoodhill was able to create a tiny slice of the Arboretum at Hagley Park, Christchurch for the 2009 Ellerslie International Flower Show.

The initial design of a minature arboreal oasis was created by Debra Stewart of TerraForme. The main focus was the giant polystyrene acorns created by Ian Smail and Brian Campbell in Gisborne. These acorns added a wonderful sense of drama that attracted the attention of judges. Other features included a huge backdrop photo, side mirrors, garden gate, Herbarium samples from Eastwoodhill and touch screen computer with a very sophisticated mapping system of Eastwoodhill. The wonderful oak seedlings, under story and large trees were supplied by Allenton nursery and the Little Big Tree Company.

The Eastwoodhill display was one of four to reach the gold standard in the keenly-contested Hort Galore division competing aginst organisations like Lincoln University and the Christchurch Botanical Gardens.

The effort was backed by a $5000 grant from the Eastland Community Trust and also a grant from Tourism Eastland. Without the support of theses organisations and all the 'Friends' who provided time and money to the project - Eastwoodhill would not have had a presence let alone a gold award.
